Menu Planning Tool

Occasionally, what I do for a living improves my real life. In this case, meal planning. I am a meal planner. I do most of the weekend cooking and I usually wing it. But during the week, the cooking is shared among my husband, nanny and (on a rare occasion) me. [...]

Aloha for My Father

I wrote the following post on March 31st, 2009. The day my dad passed away on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. He was taken there after suffering a stroke at his second home on Molokai.

Urban Living 1

I thought that getting my kid into school in NYC was overly complicated and time consuming. Then I spoke with my friend about little league baseball in Chicago.

In homage to full-time help.

My husband stayed home with our daughter for her whole first year. At somewhere around 8 months he realized that he was also not cut out to be a SAH anything (I knew this about myself from the get-go, but I think this is because women think about this more than men). So, he got himself a job and we got our first nanny.

Average Commute Time

On the topic of the neighborhood. Factors include proximity to: a good grocery store; a gym; a park; a good restaurant or two; friends; public transportation (if in a big city). Also to be considered are how easy is it to walk from your house; how hard is it to park; how lively (or quiet) is it? Once you find the PERFECT place to live – you have to add the additional wrinkle of how long it takes to your office. Here is my new formula for evaluating wether or not your commute time is worth it.

Gratitude

Today I’m in Vevey, Switzerland. In my career I’ve been very fortunate to enjoy business travel to some nice places though I have to say, this one nears the top of the list for looks. I could not do this job or enjoy these views without a supportive family.

Seasonally Affected

There are 2 feet of snow in my front yard and it is raining on them.  Now that the sun is starting to rally for us and hanging… on… just… a… little… bit… longer each day, I’m dying to get out of dodge and find more of it.  In a moment of masochism, I looked [...]

Work-related travel

We recently pitched a huge piece of business based in a place that is very hard to get to. We didn’t win, but while we were waiting to find out I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what I would do if we did. How would I manage my life knowing that I would be traveling a lot. Probably, leaving in the afternoon, spending the night and not to getting home before 11pm the next night and doing this at least once a week. What a mess.

On being sick

I am a big proponent of “if you are sick, stay home” but cannot seem to apply this to myself.

Weeknight Cooking

Food. When my first child was born I made most every meal and shunned jars of baby food for a while (I got over that). Today, I try to eat healthfully and constantly strive to get a nice variety of good-tasting and good-for-you food on the table. I’ve learned a few important things in this [...]
