These days work is life and living takes a lot of work. The lines between our careers, identity, interests and family are often blurred. Toil & Boil aims to draw better lines, find interesting points of intersection and discover fun in our personal and professional lives. We hope to present a well-rounded picture of individuals balancing careers and a fulfilling life as they discuss what works and what doesn’t in the pursuit to stay sane.
Our Authors:
Molly Scofield
Molly works full time in Marketing and overtime as a wife and mother. She followed her heart, more than her head, as she left Seattle in the late 90s to move around Oregon: first the coast then Portland and eventually the resort town of Bend. Throughout this journey she has enjoyed meeting wonderful, smart, entrepreneurial people who have kept her career in a growth pattern despite efforts to live as a ski bum in the woods. Molly always said she’d live abroad and ignoring her Piscean tendency to dream out loud, her employer is taking her up on it. Molly, her husband and two kids moved to Paris in June of 2009 for her job. They had to leave the dog.
Eilish Canady
Eilish thinks she should not be involved in this project because she, too, has a busy career and family. But this is exactly why Eilish and Molly first thought of Toil & Boil. They are gluttons for punishment and really need just one more thing to do. Eilish has a demanding job and two adorable, demanding girls. Eilish is married to a traveling salesman with a penchant for romance and sartorial perfection. Among the many challenges (we call them “opportunities to learn”) Eilish faces each day are her 4 year old wearing pajamas to school, her 1 year old holding her breath when she is upset, getting work done and whether or not she has on the right shoes. She does this all with an unbelievably calm disposition.
Christine Shoaf
Christine lives in New York with her husband, Jimmy, a 6th grade teacher and a precocious (as only a city kid can be) preschooler. She has a big job at a big advertising agency. Her daughter tells people that she makes TV. She doesn’t. She makes digital stuff… websites and other things. Christine has a great, fulltime babysitter named Brittany – who recently had a daughter, herself. The new baby will be coming to work with Brittany as soon as the pediatrician gives the okay.
