Fête de la Musique and Surfing Biarritz

It was a better week in week 2.  On Thursday night we hit the Ogilvy summer party where the husband made surf-love to a new friend when he was invited to Biarritz for the weekend - some sun and some surf.  As of this report he is not back yet but I expect to see a blissed-out, glassy-eyed, lover of waves fully rejuvenated later tonight.  That is, if he can get to our apartment - read on…

While he was away, I spent time with my girlfriend from the US who is hanging about France for much of this summer.

We heard of the Fête de la Musique which happens every June 21 in Paris and is a no-holds-barred party in the streets.  The whole city is taken over by bands and DJs offering up the best that they’ve got on street corners and in parks.  For our G-rated crew we walked around the Luxembourg Gardens this afternoon (I swear, we do go other places) to let our kids wander and take in some music ourselves.

These kids don’t even know how amazing each day here is.  What did you do today? Oh, you know, the usual.  Some crepes. Walked up to the Lux.  Rode the carousel (again), watched the boats… blah blah blah.

On the way back we passed several terrific bands but decided to make dinner and call it a night.  What the hell were we thinking?  The party does not get started around here until 9.  Presently just encircling the block that our apartment is on, there are 3 bands and a DJ.  Across the street, at Cafe Jade, there is, I’m wagering a guess here, one of the hotter acts of the whole festival.  The scene is just getting started (note - 10pm) but the beats are pumping and the croud is bumping.  In looking for the name of the DJ, I found a link to a video someone took last year - this represents fairly well where things are headed:

I’d like to tell you that I threw caution to the wind, grabbed a bottle of wine and ran out to join the crowd. Alas. I have kids in bed and do have to work tomorrow.  Not that I’ll be sleeping tonight.  And as for that husband of mine… I have no clue how he is going to get to our front door.  Or how I’ll hear him if he rings up from below.

  1. Update at 11:57pm:
    1. The video IS representative of reality. Except the sound quality is better and you can feel the vibrations of the single-paned glass windows.
    2. No sign of the husband.
    3. As a result of #s 1 and 2, no sign of sleep either.
